Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and pre-diabetes continue to rise, with negative health effects that often precede a T2D diagnosis. Fasting insulin has been shown to be an independent predictor of T2D risk. This study examined the CARDIA dataset to analyze fasting insulin, fasting glucose, and five-year risk of T2D. The 4th quartile of fasting insulin was a significant predictor of five-year risk of T2D in isolation, in comparison to the normoglycemic group and the glucose 100-110mg/dL group, but not the glucose 111-125mg/dL group. This study provides further evidence that fasting insulin can be a clinically relevant predictor of T2D.
