Drug-induced liver injury (DILI), although rare, is the leading cause of acute liver failure and has been associated with a variety of medications. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) DILI Database Project established new approaches to identify DILI events within VHA populations. The purpose of this study was to utilize those approaches to assess DILI incidence associated with ciprofloxacin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic. Additionally, disparities in risk regarding age, gender, and race/ethnicity were evaluated. A better understanding of these risk disparities among patients receiving ciprofloxacin will allow for more informed prescribing and efficient monitoring moving forward.
