Some examples include: the emperor Augustus bragging that his wife, daughter, and granddaughters made all of his clothing by hand; prioritizing ’homespun’ cloth over imported fabrics during the American Revolution; the Arts and Crafts movement in general, and Mahatma Gandhi’s return to traditional Indian textile techniques. This spirit continues into modern uses of textile arts for social activism in interesting ways. Bring your current portable craft project (spinning, knitting, sewing etc) and engage in a discussion of how hindsight isn't always 20/20 when it's intentionally presented for political gains.
