Gender identity isn’t binary. Twelve percent of millennials identify as
transgender or gender non-conforming. More and more people are using
gender-neutral pronouns. But many apps and services give users just two options: male or female. We (dscout) took a hard look at how our platform asked users about gender—then conducted qualitative research with ~70 people across the gender spectrum. How might we build a more inclusive experience for our non-cisgender users? This research surfaced four design principles for gender-identity inclusion—and insights for any company looking to move beyond the binary.
