Old Crisis, Novel Means: Applying new tools to encourage company action in support of civic freedoms and human rights defenders

Companies are increasingly speaking out and taking action against restrictions on civic freedoms and in support of human rights defenders. This year, CEOs of Kering, Unilever and Virgin, openly supported the youth climate strike, Adidas, Nike and others urged the Cambodian Government to drop criminal charges against labour rights activists, Primark, adidas and others publicly stated that when defenders were under attack, so was sustainable, profitable business and Microsoft announced it was using its AI capabilities to support better trial monitoring. However, these examples are still few and far between and companies find it difficult to determine whether and when to provide support. “Shared space under pressure”, guidance launched in 2018, offers companies a decision-making framework and menu of potential actions to increase private sector support for civic freedoms and defenders.
