"If we cannot address the present and future needs of computational research with proprietary digital content, scholarly content and research libraries alike will lose much of their relevance, value, and impact in the world. Current strategies include negotiating shared models for access, developing model licenses, using virtualized environments, non-consumptive research models, and relying on the fair use doctrine. Tensions and competing priorities surrounding these strategies is a theme that emerged in a recent IMLS-funded national forum on text data mining with proprietary data (https://publish.illinois.edu/limitedaccess-tdm/). What do we need to do to make sure that the scholarly information ecosystem robustly supports computational research? With years of experience in having this conversation with (and as) publishers, librarians, researchers, and representatives of scholarly associations and other information organizations, the panelists share their insights into both the big picture and the nitty-gritty challenges of bringing all players together before we fall apart.

This lively discussion will engage the audience in understanding the importance of -- and strategies for -- developing new models of access to digital content for computational research, featuring experts from multiple stakeholder communities: Kate Wittenberg (Portico), Marc Cormier (Gale), Mike Furlough (HathiTrust), the Darby Orcutt (NCSU Libraries), Ivy Anderson (California Digital Library), Megan Senseney (University of Illinois). The session was organized in collaboration with Eleanor Dickson Koehl (University of Illinois) and Beth Sandore Namachchivaya (University of Waterloo)."
