Innovation across the networking stack takes many forms and the dawn of GenAI has opened up some unexpected opportunities. The RAN portion of networks constitutes the largest resource allocation (both CapEx and OpEx) for network operators and is vastly underutilized (25-50% capacity). Cloudifying the RAN as a service in multi-tenant cloud infrastructure and running it as a containerized solution alongside other applications cuts operators costs, represents a leap forward for sustainability, and perhaps most significantly, allows for the monetization of new edge applications and services, such as GenAI.
