70% of grant calls published on the Research Beeline funding platform which targets researchers in the global South require international collaboration. Major funding agencies including European Commission, NIH, UKRI among others often demand applicants from both North and South to work together in submitting applications for their calls. This is truly very much in the spirit of SDG 17, however, constituting the international teams remains one of the main challenges that is hindering global South participation in global funding calls.
There exist challenges on both side of the divide that slow down the process of collaboration and we hope to bring on the table participants from both sides to demystify international collaboration, identify the pain points that hold back participation and at the same time suggest solutions that can be applied at policy and execution level both in our institutions and by individuals (entire research ecosystem).
Despite a clear commitment on moving together and leaving no one behind in attainment of the 17 SDGs, this may be far from achieved, seven years after the SDGs were set. Within SDG 17, there are clear targets to support global south through funding, enhanced capacity in resource mobilization and access to science, technology and innovation; in our session during UNGA77, we cross examine where we are in achieving this goal with a particular interest in North-South cooperation in science, technology and innovation.
With help from our speakers, we explore on the readiness of scientists to work together in collaborative teams and what could be the challenges that has hampered its achievement, what are the mitigation factors both in policy and actions that are needed from both North and South to made immediate progress and what role technology can play in accelerating the needed interventions.
