Reverse the Red is a global movement to unite tools and promote partnerships that catalyze species conservation and support countries in delivering Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) post 2020 targets. This umbrella initiative aims to help lead strategic biodiversity conservation and provide critical leadership and support at national level to coordinate expertise within countries.

Reverse the Red calls us to imagine, and then create, a world where governments, academia, civil society, zoos, aquariums and botanic gardens, universities and local communities work together within each country under a united strategy, using their unique skills, resources and efforts to scale-up, measure and sustain our collective ability to save species, now and into the future.

A key component to the success of Reverse the Red is for leading conservation organizations within each region and country to join the movement as Centers for Species Survival. These Centers act as catalyzers, working with the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) and other partners to understand the key networks, stakeholders and conservation efforts that are (or could be) underway in the country to identify priority gaps and ensure efforts are connected effectively and have access to the necessary tools and resources needed to maximize impact.

Another important element that would allow us to mobilize national networks and work together to reverse the negative trends shown on IUCN Red Lists are the SSC National Species Specialist Groups. Through this model, we are convening a broad range of biodiversity experts to form new, diverse, cross-taxa groups of volunteers at the national level to support governments and facilitate science-based decision making in assessments, planning and action.

During this session we will explore both models: Centers for Species Survival and SSC National Species Specialists Groups to demonstrate that through clear, creative target setting, ambitious capacity building and increased collaborative action, we can reverse the negative trends in biodiversity loss.
