Rabban Gamliel is an infamous character of Rabbinic literature who can be characterized as authoritarian and unforgiving in his enforcing of a uniform Jewish practice - until Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya briefly takes over and shakes things up irrevocably. Does their story have bearing on us today? Using traditional Talmudic texts, Rory Michelle's song "Rabban Gamliel," and examples from our own lives and communities, we will explore the balance of preservation and innovation in Jewish practice.
