In 2014, Wiley’s Usage-Based Collection Management Model (UBCM) launched in response to librarians’ increasing need for more flexible approaches to building their online book collections. With no automatic triggers, UBCM remediated on many of the challenges of the prevailing DDA models by leveraging an evidence-based approach that put purchasing control back in the library’s hands. Since UBCM’s inception, program enrollment has tripled.

This session details the experience of one of UBCM’s first members—the University of Wisconsin System, one of the largest systems of public higher education in the country with 13 four-year universities, 13 freshman-sophomore UW Colleges campuses, and statewide UW-Extension with the operating principle of ‘one system, one library’. With initial enrollment dating back to the Program’s beginnings in 2014, the University of Wisconsin System has renewed their participation this year for the fourth consecutive time.

Attendees will benefit from two critical perspectives, the UW System’s Library Program Director and a Librarian/Associate Professor at UW-La Crosse, one of the system’s member institutions. As they begin their fourth year in the Program, the panelists are well positioned to reflect on how they’ve evolved title selection practices over the course of their journey, leveraging long-term usage data to make purchasing decisions that reflect alignment with their current collection and support of the consortium as a whole. With the distinct benefit of a four-year perspective on participating in an evidence-based model, the panelists will be able to offer key learnings, best practices, as well as the challenges they’ve faced in the process.

A Wiley Senior Account Manager who works closely with the UW System will provide a 5-minute Program overview at the conclusion of the panelists’ presentation. Additional time for questions and an open discussion with the audience will also ensure engagement and facilitate lively discussion.
