The OECD Observatory of Public Sector Innovation (OPSI) and its partners at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation are excited to convene innovators from around the world for a conference on Innovation in Government: The New Normal on 20-21 November 2017. The conference will highlight insights from OPSI’s work with countries that are transforming their operations and improving the lives of their people through innovation. It will bring together government leaders, public servants, and innovative partners in industry and civil society to connect, share experiences, and collaborate.

Digital Transformation: Lessons Learned and the Path Forward

Digital transformation has been one of the hottest issues in the innovation field for the last few years. Governments are working to catch up with tech practices common in the private sector, and in many cases, are innovating to come up with new and creative approaches to use technology to solve the world’s most difficult challenges. The concept of specialised groups like the Government Digital Service (GDS) in the UK has spread through countries including the U.S., Canada, and Australia, with more expected in the future. Digital government fellowships like the U.S.’s Presidential Innovation Fellows and France’s Entrepreneurs d'Intérêt Général are also on the rise. It’s not just central governments using these approaches, as initiatives similar to Code for America and its grassroots brigades are now helping local governments all over the world. There have been great strides in digital transformation in recent years, but also some setbacks and challenges. This session explores these and considers how to move forward.
