Session 4 - Moving Beyond Text: Extending Student Engagement with Multimodal Storytelling

In this session--through audience participation in interactive exercises and a discussion of project examples--we will highlight how the video program at Bucknell has moved beyond instructional to transformational by partnering with faculty to scaffold successful video assignments that increase student engagement. Until recently, video production projects have primarily been seen as a form of entertainment or recreation often added-in at the end of the semester as a rushed and poorly produced final project that frustrates both faculty and students. However, our culture has moved from text-based to one that is increasingly visual. As such, learning to critique and write in multimodal formats is essential for training our undergraduates to be effective communicators and consumers of knowledge. Multimodal storytelling in the classroom allows undergraduate students to connect course content through a reflective process that also develops their digital, visual, and media literacy skills.
