Many technical services departments have cataloging backlogs, and most academic libraries employ student workers. But how can we leverage student help in our cataloging work? In this session, multiple catalogers from academic libraries will discuss how they use student workers in cataloging workflows. Possible student duties to be discussed include searching gifts, triaging duplicates, basic and complex copy-cataloging, original cataloging, check-in of books with cataloging partners records, and data entry to assist in original cataloging (such as contents notes and summaries). Students can also be used for special projects, including retrospective conversion, searching for digitized versions of older materials, batch processing using MARCEdit, and many others. In addition, presenters may also share how students are selected and trained in their institutions.
