*The Safest Restraints Are Those You Avoid: Creating an Environment To Do So

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

This presentation will provide examples of strategies for educators that inervene with individuals who demonstrate challenging and confrontational behavior that could escalate into a potentail moment of crisis.  In such a moment, staff can either escalate or de-escalate the situation.  The safest restraints are those you learn how to avoid.  Understanding preventive strategies to create an environment to de-escalate a student in crisis is the first step toward making your classrooms both physically and emotionally safer places for learning.  Learn to control what you can control: your attitude, your approach, the climate and learning environment within your classroom.  The session will highlight examples of proactive strategies from CPI's Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training program, and the Time to Teach! Position staff to best prepare for the next possible difficult or confrontational situation.

As a result of this session, participants will be ready to identify:

  • Examples of preventive measures to recognize stages of escalation, and corresponding responses to help de-escalate the person(s)
  • Strategies to reduce time spent on managing off-task, low level classroom behaviors, and increase time to teach
  • Examples of the impact of staff nonverbal behavior in an episode
  • Examples of verbal strategies for managing behavior
  • The value of debriefing after a difficult situation to foster future learning and change
  • Information about the risks and dangers of restraints
  • The need for ongoing training, practice and application of skills
